DUI License

Driver's License Status

A major concern following a DUI arrest is the possibility of losing your driver’s license.  There are many factors that can influence your driving status after a DUI arrest.  A DUI arrest or conviction does not always mean you will lose your privilege to drive.  The penalties for DUI and related offenses can vary significantly, from a short- or long-term restriction to a suspension to a complete revocation of your license.

There is often confusion about whether it is the Michigan Department of State or the court who determines driver's license status after a DUI.  We will help you understand each agency's role in the process. We will also educate you on the most effective ways to avoid suspension or revocation, if the law allows, or to minimize the length of time your license is suspended/revoked.

Michigan's new Sobriety Court law makes it possible for even repeat offenders to maintain a license under certain conditions. We have the expertise and experience necessary to help you get the best possible outcome for your case.

More information is available on the Michigan Secretary of State's Alcohol/Drug Offense information page and Substance Abuse and Driving information page.

Driver's License Restoration

If the Driver Assessment and Appeal Division (DAAD) does revoke your license, we will help you get it restored as quickly as the law allows.

Approximately 30 percent of the people who apply for reinstatement are awarded a license at their first hearing, according to the DAAD. The success rate of NextStepDUI clients, however, is approximately 90 percent.  We will not recommend you apply for restoration or submit your evaluation to the DAAD until we believe you are completely prepared and have an excellent chance of being successful at your hearing. If you do not appear ready, we will make responsible recommendations that should improve your future candidacy.  Credibility is very important at the DAAD, both ours and yours; instead of wasting your time or money we will refer you to the appropriate professionals who can help you responsibly recover your license.

DUI laws and rules change frequently. We stay up-to-date with all amendments and revisions in the applicable laws, penalties and procedures. More information about Sobriety Court, driver's license restoration, license appeal hearings, reinstatement fees and other related topics is available here.

Auto Insurance

NextStepDUI clients often ask if they can get auto insurance after a DUI and, if so, is it expensive.  Due to major changes in the insurance industry over the last few years, most people can qualify for reasonable rates. It is wise to compare insurance agents and providers before making a decision. There are a number of on-line resources available to assist you. A good place to start is the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS).
